Gent –

The Citadel Park will become ‘Park Central’ this summer. All cultural institutions around the green pool unite and organize activities.

Mathias De Clercq (Open VLD) dreams of turning the South Park into a kind of Central Park. Until then, the mayor can spend the coming months in ‘Park Centraal’. All cultural organizations in and around the Citadel Park unite under this heading: the museums SMAK, MSK and GUM, the summer bars Monterey and Baracita, the Botanic Garden and Ensemble vzw. The agenda includes exhibitions, concerts, workshops, walks and cozy food and drinks, including in the old animal shelter.

On Thursday, the start of summer in the Citadel Park was given with the opening of a four-day open-air exhibition: public park, by Young Friends of the SMAK. One of the eye-catchers is the work Happy 50th anniversary by the Tokyo-born Ghent artist Clara Spilliaert. The artist has given the Kotoji lantern a new look in honor of the fifty-year-old friendship between Ghent and the Japanese Kanazawa.

public park is an exhibition perfectly tailored to Ghent, says Alderman of Culture Sami Souguir (Open VLD): “We have a long tradition in Ghent of showing modern art in public space, just think of Guest room on Over the edges. This allowed you to discover your city on the way from one work of art to another. With public park you can do that in the Citadel Park.”
