Getting to know the Moderna Vaccine, the Third Injection for Indonesian Health Workers

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The government will use Covid-19 vaccine type Modern, to be used as an additional dose of vaccine or booster vaccine against health workers who are considered susceptible to being exposed to SARS-CoV-2.

The Moderna type of covid-19 vaccine, developed by the biotechnology company Moderna from Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been widely used in several countries as a national vaccination, such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In addition to Indonesia, the mRNA vaccine is also a candidate for additional vaccine doses in Australia. A total of 15 million doses of the vaccine are reported to be delivered by 2022.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the Moderna vaccine is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on Sunday (11/7). He plans to start the third vaccination for health workers next week.

Claimed to be effective against the new corona variant

The Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) said the Modena vaccine was effective against mutations of the B117 Alpha, B1351 Beta, and P1 Gamma corona viruses. Meanwhile, the latest evidence for the B1617 Delta variant has not been reported.

Head of BPOM Penny K Lukito explained that the efficacy of the Moderna vaccine reached 94 percent for people over 18 to 65 years. While the elderly over 65 years reached 86.4 percent. BPOM also assessed that the Moderna vaccine has immunity that is suitable for Indonesian people who have comorbidities or comorbidities.

In phase three clinical trials, Penny explained that the Moderna vaccine is quite good for people with chronic lung disease, heart disease, obesity, liver, diabetes and HIV.

Vaccine developer Moderna reportedly updated the vaccine mRNA formulation to account for changes in the spike protein present in variant B1351 of South African origin.

In March, Moderna began phase 1 and 2 clinical trials to investigate the safety and efficacy of the booster vaccine for the B1351 variant. Preclinical studies have shown that vaccination with a special variant of B1351 is said to be effective in increasing neutralizing antibodies.

Quoted Reuters, the study also said the mixture of the booster vaccine and the original vaccine was found to be effective in providing protection across variants, including the P.1 variant from Brazil.

It is possible that Moderna may update its vaccine, responding to a future variant of the coronavirus. So it is thought to be able to provide protection to people with newly emerging viral mutations.

Quoted The ConversationThe Moderna vaccine, which is used as a supplemental dose, contains the genetic instructions for human cells to make spike proteins from the coronavirus.

mRNA is encased in an oily shell that protects it from being immediately degraded by the body, and ensures it is delivered to cells after injection.

Once inside the cell, the mRNA is converted into a protein that the immune system can recognize. The immune system then builds an immune response against the spike protein, and learns how to fight the coronavirus if it enters the body.

Moderna vaccines can be stored at -20 degrees Celsius for up to six months. Since most pharmaceutical logistics companies are able to store and transport products at a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius, the storage and distribution of these vaccines is relatively easy.

The vaccine development company Moderna claims a phase 3 clinical trial with more than 30,000 participants showed 94.1 percent efficacy in preventing the SarS-CoV-2 virus, as well as providing protection for people with comorbidities.

The researchers also revealed the side effects after the injection of the Moderna vaccine. Side effects such as temporary pain at the injection point, headaches, and fatigue for up to three days are often experienced by vaccine recipients.
