Getting to Know the Bedding Phenomenon That Makes the Air Super Cold

EAST JAVA – For those in the East Java region, do you feel the air temperature is cold during the dry season like today? The occurrence of cold temperatures felt by several areas in East Java during the dry season apparently raised many questions in the community.

No need to worry, because according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the phenomenon of cold air temperature is a natural phenomenon that usually occurs in the peak months of the dry season (July – September).

“This condition is commonly referred to as the bediding phenomenon,” the BMKG wrote on its Instagram account.

The bediding phenomenon occurs because currently the Java to NTT region is heading for the peak period of the dry season, which in this period is marked by the movement of the dominant wind blowing from the east originating from the Australian continent.

BMKG explained that in July this Australian region was in the winter period. The nature of the air mass in Australia is cold and dry.

The existence of a pattern of relatively high air pressure in Australia causes the movement of air masses from Australia to Indonesia or known as the Australian Cold Monsoon.

The Australian monsoon winds blowing towards Indonesian territory through the waters of the Indonesian Ocean which has a relatively cooler sea surface temperature, resulting in cooler temperatures in some areas in Indonesia, especially the southern part of the equator (Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara).

The decrease in cloud and rain on the islands of Java, Bali, NTB, and NTT has been seen quite significantly in the last few days also accompanied by a decrease in the water vapor content in the atmosphere.

Physically, BMKG explained, water vapor and water are substances that are quite effective in storing heat energy.

Thus, the low vapor content in the atmosphere causes the radiation energy released by the earth into space at night is not stored in the atmosphere and the energy used to increase the atmospheric temperature in the atmosphere near the earth’s surface is insignificant.

This is what causes the air temperature in Indonesia at night in the dry season is relatively lower than during the rainy season or transition.

In addition, the water content in the soil is thinning and there is very little water vapor in the air as evidenced by the low humidity of the air.
