Getting to know Coronasomnia, Sleep Disorders During a Pandemic

Sleep disturbances can also be experienced by someone even though they are not exposed to the corona virus.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — COVID-19 can not only interfere with a person’s physical health, but also psychologically. Some people say experiencing sleep disturbance during the COVID-19 pandemic called coronasomnia.

Psychiatrist or Psychiatrist, dr. Andri, Sp.KJ said sleep disturbances during the pandemic usually start when someone is infected with COVID-19. “So when he was infected with the corona, when he was sick, they had trouble sleeping. Especially usually for people who might not have thought that he could get Covid,” said dr. Andri when contacted, Wednesday (4/8).

In addition, dr. Andri also explained that sleep disorders can also be experienced by someone even though they are not exposed to the corona virus. Usually, because they do not accept the conditions of this pandemic. “It’s like an extraordinary fear due to the news related to Covid. Maybe a lot of people who say ‘Oh this can die’ can come out of nowhere. That’s one of them,” he said.

Coronasomnia can also be experienced by people who already have a previous history of anxiety disorders. Thus, an existing anxiety disorder will worsen a person’s condition.

To deal with this disorder, dr. Andri explained the way to deal with it was to provide assistance with sleeping pills. Second, a psychiatrist will also help you sleep better.

In addition to sleep disorders, other disorders that many people experience in the midst of this pandemic are anxiety disorders. “At most, it’s anxiety disorders. So from the beginning of March 2020, in fact, patients with anxiety disorders are dominant. So, I’m just worried that there are symptoms of coughing and cold, oh no, don’t worry about COVID. Then there will be shortness of breath, a little tired, I think it’s COVID,” he explained.

“But if it’s now, the last six months starting from January, actually until around last June, that’s what the most anxiety is because the COVID condition itself is already in their midst. For example, in their families, they even get it themselves ,” he said.

Seeing this, dr. Andi believes that the problem of anxiety disorders due to COVID-19 is not good for the condition of the community. Moreover, if someone does have a history of anxiety disorders.

Dr. Andri suggested that one way that can be done to avoid these disturbances is to reduce the intake of negative news related to COVID-19. “Our brains have been designed from the start, yes, it is indeed to respond to negative things better than positive things,” he said.

“So, if for example there is something positive, it takes longer for it to enter the brain. Because later there will always be thoughts of what if that doesn’t happen. That’s called negativity, yes, if we in psychiatry say it like that “said Dr. Andri.

However, because now the news is everywhere, such as WhatsApp groups, social media, and so on, it might be a little difficult for the public to avoid the news. “If you can’t, give it time. For example, if you want to see the news, prepare yourself first. For example by doing relaxation, doing fun things. Or for example reading something good like the holy book,” he said.

Not only that, dr. Andri also suggested that people continue to exercise and do physical activities in the sun and take vitamins and balance them with nutritious food intake.
