Virus flare-up or not, Gert Verhulst (52) and James Cooke (35) are eager to board the Evanna again. The duo will start their eighth season of ‘Gert late night’ at the beginning of September, and want to do that in “conditions as normal as possible”. “The corona version was a success, but now it can be about ordinary things again.”

Ever since Evanna docked for her summer break in late May, things have been calm for Gert Verhulst and James Cooke. Verhulst saw his farewell shows with Samson pushed forward, Cooke postponed his marriage to partner Dorian – which should have taken place in August – for a year. Only cook Annie (74) benefited from the lockdown: she wrote her first cookbook, Just act normal, which will hit shelves in October.
But enough thumbs turned, Verhulst and Cooke think. The two presenters prepare with their team the eighth season of Gert late night in front of. “After the summer we will go on antenna again anyway,” says Four-spokesman Lies Maesschalck. “Whether we do that according to the old formula, or again in a modified version like last season, we will decide in mid-August.”
Best viewed season
Last spring’s corona edition looked quite different. Every day a different couple of guests got on Evanna, and no one stayed the night. Verhulst and Cooke do not either. In addition, many interviews and Cookes format Bed secrets via video connection. “We hope to work normally again in the new season,” says Maesschalck. “Gert who has breakfast with his guests in the morning, James who puts some reality back into the program… But that’s just looking at coffee grounds. If that doesn’t work, we don’t panic. We have fueled confidence from that corona version. It took a while to adjust, but the teething problems were quickly resolved. And the ratings say it all: it was our best viewed season ever. ”
In any case, the production team will soon adhere to the applicable precautions. For example, most of the editors work at home. There is also good consultation with the guests for each episode. “We cannot ignore the situation, but with us it can also be about ordinary things,” says Maesschalck.
