Gerrit Cole leaves Yankees game against Blue Jays with left hamstring strain

NEW YORKNew York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole left the mound in Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays with two outs in the fourth inning with a strained left hamstring.

Cole was retired after allowing a sacrifice fly to Reese McGuire that gave Toronto a 3-1 lead.

After center fielder Aaron Judge’s shot strayed from his glove, Cole gestured toward the dugout and was checked by coach Tim Lentych. Later, Cole was replaced by Albert Abreu.

Cole allowed three runs, two of them earned, and five hits in three and a half innings. He threw 70 pitches while the Blue Jays had several extended at-bats against him.

Cole struck out two, tying the Philadelphia Phillies’ Zack Wheeler for the major league lead with 217.

The Yankees ace entered Tuesday with a 14-6 record with a 2.73 ERA. He was 4-0 with a 0.73 ERA in four starts since losing time after testing positive for COVID-19. He struck out 15 in seven innings Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels.
