Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius caught in airline chaos during vacation in Madeira

Even as a minister you don’t need business class to go on holiday.

Dense fog caused delays at Madeira airport on Saturday evening. The passengers on an Easyjet flight to Berlin had to wait six extra hours at the airport – only to find out that the plane had been cancelled. Frustration at the end of vacation!

► Right in the middle: Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (63). A BILD reader discovered the SPD politician among those waiting. With a casual backpack, rolling suitcase and his partner Julia Schwanholz.

“He takes good care of his partner, caresses her and comforts her while she waits,” the eyewitness told BILD. Schwanholz got some food again. For a little more comfort at the airport there was water, wine and chips.

At around 8:15 p.m., after six hours of waiting and frustration, the announcement was made: The flight will be canceled! All passengers then go back to the hotel – at Easyjet’s expense. There had previously been hope that the plane could be diverted due to the ban on night flights at BER.

It wasn’t until Sunday that the Defense Minister and his partner finally took to the air, sitting on the plane around 12 p.m. local time. Beforehand, they stood in the queue with all the other passengers – in a very down-to-earth manner – and checked in their luggage. Then we went back to Germany in good weather and clear visibility. The plane landed in Berlin at 5:35 p.m.

When asked by BILD, the Ministry of Defense did not want to comment on the minister’s vacation.

By the way: The SPD politician had already vacationed in Madeira last January, when he was still Lower Saxony’s interior minister. As soon as he returned, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65, SPD) called Pistorius – and made him defense minister. Since then, he has become the country’s most popular politician.
