“The filling of gas storages is almost 65%. This is better than in previous weeks, but not enough to survive the winter without Russian gas,” Miller said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
While he urged citizens not to panic, Müller warned that the risk of gas shortages in Germany could persist this winter and next.
At the same time, he stressed that although Germany currently does not have sufficient reserves to meet its gas needs this winter, other countries such as Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium can supply.
The official stated that Germany’s energy situation will largely depend on supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, whose maintenance should end on July 21.
At the end of June, it was reported in the media that Germany might stop gas exports to neighboring countries in order to reduce the deficit of this energy resource in Europe’s largest economy.
On July 10, Canada agreed to return to Russia a turbine intended for “Nord Stream 1” located in Montreal due to sanctions. The state also approved repairs to pipeline equipment over the next two years.
