Germany to accommodate citizens due to rising energy prices | Abroad

Germany is introducing measures to alleviate the consequences of rising energy bills for households. On Wednesday, the government approved a package worth billions of euros.

An important part of the agreements is the withdrawal of an energy surcharge that would partly pay for the switch to renewable electricity. The surcharge will be discontinued on 1 July. This measure alone is worth 6.6 billion euros.

The coalition parties also agreed to broaden the tax deduction for commuting to offset the rising fuel prices for commuters. In addition, the minimum amount on which no income tax is levied is increased from 1000 to 1200 euros.

Low income

For low-income parents struggling to make ends meet, the coalition has agreed to a special payment of €20 per child per month, effective July 1. People on benefits also receive a one-off 100 euros.

Europe has been struggling with an energy crisis for some time. The gas price has recently reached record highs. The escalation of the conflict between the West and Russia over Ukraine has pushed prices even higher. Yesterday the gas price was 78 euros, an increase of 7.5 percent. Oil has also become significantly more expensive in recent days. Germany also closed three of its last six nuclear power plants at the end of last year.
