Germany is preparing to accept 1,500 migrants from the Greek islands

The DPA wrote that the plan had already been discussed with the Greek government. The Federal Ministry of the Interior wants to send a working group to Lesbos to find out who needs protection most urgently. The purpose is to use “objective criteria” in the selection process, “in order to avoid uncontrollable consequences,” the ministry said.

Merkel’s and Seehofer’s proposal will still require the SPD’s approval. At the same time, it demanded that Germany accept several thousand refugees from Greece.

After the camp on the island of Lesbos was reduced to ashes last week, more than 12,000 migrants found themselves homeless. The Greek authorities themselves have not officially requested other countries to accept migrants other than 400 unaccompanied minors.

At Lesbos, meanwhile, the construction of a tent camp for migrants who lost their roofs over their heads began. But many fear they will be locked up in the camp, and others hope to relocate to the Greek mainland or another European country, the DPA writes.

Last week, Seehofer announced that Germany would accept 100 to 150 unaccompanied migrant minors. The rest of the 400 minors should be taken care of by another ten European countries.
