Germany asks the king of Thailand not to ‘rule’ from its territory

Jakarta

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas responded to questions from lawmakers from the Hjau Party and emphasized that Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn is not allowed to run politics from German territory.

“We have made it clear that politics about Thailand cannot be done from German soil,” Heiko Maas told parliament on Wednesday.

“If there are guests in our country who run their country affairs from our territory, we will always act to counter that.”

Green Party lawmaker Frithjof Schmidt previously asked the government several questions about Germany’s position on widespread protests in Thailand demanding reforms and against the military regime backed by the Kingdom of Thailand.

“Why is the German government tolerating this very unusual – and in my opinion illegal – behavior of a foreign head of state conducting politics on German soil ?,” he asked.

Neither the Royal Palace in Bangkok nor the Thai government responded to requests for comment on this matter.

Most of them live in Germany

King Vajiralongkorn, 68, took the throne of Thailand since 2016, but he spends most of his time in the state of Bavaria, where his 15-year-old son attends school. He is said to own a luxury villa near Lake Starnberger, but often rents luxury hotels in the area because he brings in more than 100 escorts.

Protesters demanding reforms in Thailand have criticized the royal family, something that has been taboo in the country. But protesters have complained about the high cost for the monarch, who lives mostly in Europe.

Protesters on Thursday said they would gather again next week to pressure the military government to step down and call for reform of the monarchy in Thailand.
