“It is so easy. Roger Federer can choose his ranking position even without playing. Incidentally, Roger is a member of the players’ council. That makes him happy, ”writes Hordorff on Facebook.

Rafael Nadal is also using his position as a member of the players’ council, says Hordorff between the lines.

The younger generation suffers. Just like Andrei Rublev. Hordorff: “You are angry that you are winning, but not climbing the rankings.”

It’s a frontal attack on Roger Federer. Dirk Hordorff, the vice president of the German tennis association, accuses the Swiss of making the rules in tennis as he likes them.

“Roger Federer can choose his place in the ranking even without playing”
On Facebook, Hordorff is upset about the current ATP ranking system. “Some of you have trouble understanding the ATP ranking system. But it’s that simple. Roger Federer can choose his ranking position even without playing. Incidentally, Roger is a member of the players’ council. That makes him happy. “
–
So is Federer using his position on the players’ council to gain advantages? Hordorff seems to believe that. As early as December he accused him of “tinkering with his own ranking”.

Federer benefits massively
The problem: Due to the corona pandemic, it is not only tournaments from the last 52 weeks that are included in the rating, as is usually the case, but also to some extent events from 2019. As protection for players if tournaments are canceled due to the corona crisis or they are not can participate in tournaments.
–
Federer benefited from it during his long injury break. Many points of his victory in Miami 2019 and the final at Wimbledon two years ago remain in the rating, making him still the world number 6. Without this regulation, he would currently have 45 points from his comeback in Doha, nothing else. He would now be ranked 600th and would then have to rely on a ranking protected because of the injury.
–
But he doesn’t just shoot at Federer, he’s ready to attack. Rafael Nadal is also targeting the German for the same reason. World number 1 Novak Djokovic is at the front and is not interested in who is behind him and what the players’ council is doing. Andy Murray, who continues to try his hand at an artificial hip, only benefits from wild cards and does not have to win at all.
–
“Everyone doesn’t give a shit about the others”
The new generation, however, is suffering from this. Alex Zverev (De) or Andrej Rublew (Russ), for example. “They are angry that they are winning, but not climbing the rankings,” said Hordorff. The other players are all insecure and do not know what to do. “But they don’t give a shit anyway.”
–
He is not the first to criticize the current ranking system. Zverev already commented on it. “The way the ranking works now, I don’t care anymore. I should be in the top 5 or 4 with a normal system. So it’s a bit absurd, “said the world number 7. (sme)
