According to foreign media “Tom’s Hardware”, the candidate will be able to utilize his Windows 3.11 and MS-DOS knowledge to manage a railway operation system equipped with a 166 MHz processor and 8 MB RAM. The main purpose of this system is to display important train information to railway operators in real time.
Some people may think that there are safety risks in using these “ancient technologies” to maintain modern railway operations, but in fact these old hardware and operating systems, as well as software specially written for such platforms, have been tested in actual combat for many years and have evolved to the point where they can be used without any problem. To the extent that expected tasks are unexpectedly performed, this type of critical infrastructure generally adheres to the principle of “less changes, less errors, no changes, no better”.
In addition, such ancient platforms are unlikely to become targets of modern hackers, because there are not many high-value targets using systems of the same era. The cost and gain of in-depth understanding of such systems are not proportional to hackers. Generally, systems will be chosen that are used by more people and are still continuously updated, so that one vulnerability can be used to attack multiple devices.
