German-produced documentary Greetings from the Middle East screened at The Dillinger cinema sheds light on Israeli-Palestinian conflict

The Dillinger cinema is showing a film that is more than ten years old and was nowhere near as current as it is now. The producer reports on the creation of the work.

From Julia Finster

Israel – a country characterized by war, terror and conflict. At the heart of this ongoing conflict are two narratives, that of the Israelis and that of the Palestinians. Both peoples share a common story, although they tell it completely differently. In the documentary “Greetings from the Middle East,” which the Dillingen Film Center showed last week as part of a special, these two contrasting perspectives are impressively illuminated. The film, released in 2013, shows the journey of ten young people between the ages of 15 and 21 from Germany to Israel. You visit Israel, the West Bank and the settlements built there by Israel. During their stay they are accompanied by Ali, a Palestinian, and Lotty, an Israeli. Both are committed to peace in the area and give young people their perspective on the conflict in the country.

The film and the group from Germany approach these two narratives with an impressive impartiality, because only the willingness to approach the other’s story openly and receptively offers the possibility of overcoming contradictions. “Encounter as an opportunity,” says Johannes Gulde, summing up the premise underlying the film. Along with Stefanie Landgraf, he is one of the producers who was supported by, among others, the cultural department of the Foreign Office and the Robert Bosch Foundation.
