Prof. Dr. Katrin Böhning-Gaese, Director of the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt, is honored for her cutting-edge research on the preservation of biological diversity.

“The fight against species extinction is one of the greatest challenges of our time. We need a sound scientific basis so that we can succeed in preserving biological diversity. I am therefore pleased that a researcher in Hesse, the director of the Senckenberg Research Center for Biodiversity and Climate, Prof. Dr. Katrin Böhning-Gaese, has been awarded the German Environment Prize this year for her outstanding work on the preservation of biological diversity, ”said Environment Minister Priska Hinz on the occasion of the announcement of this year’s winners.

“We in Hessen support research to strengthen biological diversity and this year we founded the Lore Steubing Institute (LSI) for nature conservation and biodiversity. The LSI is an amalgamation of the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG), the Universities of Gießen, Darmstadt, Marburg, Kassel and Frankfurt am Main, the Geisenheim University and the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research. It is the first cross-institutional biodiversity research association in Germany and will be an important advisor to us when mastering this major challenge, ”said Hinz.
