German Actress Sandra Hüller Shines at Oscars – The Zone of Interest Wins Best International Film

Los Angeles (dpa) – A great setting for the German actress Sandra Hüller at the Oscars: although she did not win the award for best leading actress, she plays the female lead in the best international film of the year: The Zone of Interest. Ilker Çatak’s German Teacher’s Room was also nominated in this category, as was the Japanese Perfect Days, by German director Wim Wenders. The big winner of the 96th Oscars was the historical epic Oppenheimer, which received seven awards.

The German-language British film The Zone of Interest, starring Hüller as the wife of Auschwitz commander Höss (played by fellow German actor Christian Friedel), won in the best foreign film category. Sandra Hüller, originally from Thuringia and living in Leipzig, was also nominated for best leading actress, something that no German had achieved in more than 80 years. In the French court drama Anatomy of a Fall, she impressively plays in several languages a writer who has to stand trial for the alleged murder of her husband. However, the award went to Emma Stone for her performance in the grotesque comedy Poor Creatures.
