Guest of the program “Passage des arts”, Monday February 1, to talk about his book “Elsewhere”, Gérard Depardieu was angry against Claire Chazal at the mention of his “dictator friends”.
The conversation is launched when Claire Chazal speaks to him of his desire to “live like a child”, with the dissemination of an archive dating from 1977 where the actor speaks of his contempt for adults. “Adults bother me deeply, I don’t like adults, I don’t like people who have a costume”, we hear Gérard Depardieu say in the show Passage des Arts on France 5. Back on set, the dialogue between the journalist and the actor then takes a political turn, and controversy, when he says he has not changed his opinion on this point, especially vis-à-vis men in costume, namely men of power, those who do politics.
For him, these have a “chained power”. “But that’s not power. Power is freedom ”, proclaims Gérard Depardieu. “There are few politicians who find favor in your eyes,” Claire Chazal then points out to him, before citing the name of Jacques Chirac to which he refers in his book. “Chirac was very much loved, moreover by all my dictator friends as these journalists say at the c ***”, the actor outbid.
“First of all, I haven’t met dictators, since I run away from them, I don’t like them either. In addition, it is very difficult to… Indeed, I have not met Hitler, I have not met people who are still so stupid, ”continues Gérard Depardieu. It was then that Claire Chazal interrupted him: “Just the Russian president”. A precision that does not fail to annoy the actor. “Ah because you think he’s a Hitler?” What did he do ? Holocausts? ”Gérard Depardieu was angry.
“I would never say it’s Hitler. We can wonder about human rights in Russia ”, Claire Chazal counter-attack. “Do you think of Navalny?” Asks Gérard Depardieu in reference to Alexeï Navalny, political opponent of Vladimir Poutine currently on trial in Russia. “This is the latest example to date,” says Claire Chazal. “It’s not a question of human rights … Me, I never get involved in politics when I am in a foreign country,” Gérard Depardieu finally concluded to end the debate.
