Georgian Prime Minister Urges Unity Against Common Enemy in UN Speech

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, during his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, addressed “the Abkhaz and Ossetian brothers and sisters” to inform them that their common “enemy” with Georgia is Russia.

“I appeal to our Abkhaz and Ossetian brothers and sisters: the enemy of our unity is our common enemy. We are a brilliant people, capable of incredible achievements, but only together can we ensure long-term stability, attract major investment and realize our full potential as a united nation. We must not miss the opportunity for a peaceful, stable and prosperous future. Every step forward is aimed at returning Georgia to the European family to which we belong,” the prime minister said.

Garibashvili also expressed support for Ukraine and raised the issue of “occupation of Georgia,” calling on the international community to “convince Russia” to implement the 2008 ceasefire agreement.

“Since 2012, our government’s significant achievements, including the Association Agreement with the European Union, the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and the visa-free regime, confirm our geopolitical priority to become a member state of the European Union. Last June, the recognition of Georgia’s European perspective opened a new chapter in relations with the European Union. Recent polls have shown that almost 90 percent of Georgians support EU membership and we have reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to the 12 priorities set for EU candidate status. Thanks to a strong, inclusive and transparent internal process involving all stakeholders, we will be able to implement them by the end of the year,” said the Prime Minister of Georgia.

EADaily reported that Abkhazia and South Ossetia themselves are being denied the right to vote on international platforms by Georgia and its Western partners; Tbilisi speaks for the Abkhazians and Ossetians, declaring that they are under “Russian occupation.” At the same time, Abkhazians and Ossetians assess Georgia’s repeated attacks on Abkhazia and South Ossetia as genocide of their peoples and in no way see the future of their countries as part of Georgia. For Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russia is a country that brought peace, as well as a guarantor of security in the future.
