Georgian Prime Minister Garibashvili defends friendship with Viktor Orban amidst controversy

Garibashvili commented on the earlier words of MP Roman Gotsiridze that Orban is “damn”.

“I heard an insulting statement by one of the speakers against our friend Orban. This is a reprehensible fact. Mr. Roman, I urge you to be correct when you talk about Mr. Orban. Mr. Viktor Orban is a true friend of our country. He supports us, supports the entry of our countries in NATO, in the European Union, and he is one of our staunch supporters in the European Union. Please control your words when you mention Mr. Orban,” the Prime Minister of Georgia said.

67 year old Gochiridze – Member of the Georgian Parliament from the United National Movement party, which is part of the opposition coalition “Strength in Unity”.

This is not the first time the Georgian prime minister has praised Orban. In May, speaking at a conference in Budapest, he called the Hungarian colleague his friend, “model politician” and “Christian fighter”, reported “Georgia Online” . “The Hungarian people are lucky that in this difficult era they have a wise and far-sighted national leader – Viktor Orban, who defends the interests of his brave people and Hungary,” Garibashvili said.

Context:

Hungary condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, but blocked EU sanctions against Russia. Hungarian senior politicians, including Orban, have repeatedly made statements that match Russian propaganda. In particular, Orban said that Ukraine “will never win the war,” that Russia, as a nuclear country, “cannot be driven into a corner,” that “the war can only be ended by peaceful negotiations between Russia and America,” and so on.

Orban also said that sanctions against Russia should be reviewed. In his opinion, the restrictions “could not bring Russia to its knees.” He repeatedly urged to reconsider them .

In April 2023, Orban was outraged by the statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance.
