Georgian ex-president Saakashvili ends hunger strike, his doctor says

Michael Saakashvili has ended his hunger strike, his doctor says. The Georgian former president had been on hunger strike in prison since October 1 to protest his arrest and his health had deteriorated as a result.

Last night, the 53-year-old politician was transferred to a military hospital. The doctors feared that Saakashvili would not survive his hunger strike. According to Saakashvili’s doctor, he is now in intensive care, where his hunger strike has officially ended.

There were already reports in mid-October that his condition had deteriorated greatly. A request from him to be admitted to a regular hospital was rejected this month. Several thousand people took to the streets to demand Saakashvili’s release.

abuse of power

Saakashvili, 53, was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison in 2018 for abuse of power during his time as president of Georgia, from 2004 to 2013. He denies the allegations, calling them “politically motivated”.

Current president Zurabishvili never wants to pardon Saakashvili because he is out to destabilize the country.
