Georgian Dream founder rejects meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State amid foreign agents law controversy

The founder of the ruling party Georgian Dream and its honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili refused to meet with US Deputy Secretary of State James O’Brien, who is flying to Tbilisi. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced this at a briefing on the evening of May 13.

“There was a request for a meeting, which Bidzina Ivanishvili refused. Bidzina Ivanishvili’s position is that he cannot hold any meeting in the dark, this is his clear position,” – said Kobakhidze.

He recalled that Ivanishvili is already under sanctions – “the 2 billion dollars he gave to the West were frozen, but they ended up in the hands of the world war party.”

As soon as this blackout and de facto sanctions end, any meeting can be held immediately, the Prime Minister assured.

As reported EADaily, European politicians and diplomats, fearing that the Georgian parliament is considering a law on foreign agents, arrived in Tbilisi. Among the visitors: foreign ministers of Lithuania, Estonia, Iceland and Latvia, Chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Seimas Lithuania Zygimantas Pavilionis, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O ‘Brien.

Before that, the partners of West Georgia threatened the authorities with abandoning European integration if the law was accepted. Now they are also going to convince the Georgian leadership to accept the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.”

The Power of the People party, which supports the Georgian Dream, asked the government to refuse meetings with European politicians. The party emphasizes that these visitors openly support the United National Movement party of former President Mikheil Saakashvili, and the real purpose of their visits is the processes taking place in Georgia its radical.

On May 14, the Georgian parliament is going to adopt the law “On the transparency of Foreign Influence” in its final reading.
