How much money is in your savings account? We ask a different Dutchman every week. Because although we talk more and more about money, we never talk about exactly how much we earn and save. This week: 19-year-old Joris, who has built up quite a savings account for his age.

Profession: training machinist
The net income: 1900 euro
Living situation: own rental apartment

George’s Savings Account

What’s in your savings account?

“About 28,500 euros.”

What do you think of that amount?

“I think it’s a pretty high amount myself. I have been working full time since I was 18 and when I started working I still lived at home. At that time I already earned a relatively large amount and I was also able to save a lot.

My goal was to buy a house as soon as possible. But in the current market that is not really attractive. That is still a goal, but I am now also happy to rent. I rent for 850 euros per month inclusive. That is a lot of money, of course, but I try not to think about it too much.”

Do you have debts in addition to your savings account?

No, I am completely debt free. I did an MBO course and therefore still lived at home during the course. People always asked me: what study are you going to do next? But I was able to start working at 18 and I earn a nice pocket money. Maybe later I will earn less than someone with a college or university degree, but for my age I think I’ve done well.”

For my age, I think I’m doing pretty well.

“Many people think that MBO students are stupid, but I have seen a lot of intelligent people on the course. When people say; We also need MBO students, I find that incredibly disparaging. Personally, I think that MBO students are no less than others. I have a nice job, nice friends and I am doing well financially.”

How much do you save per month?

“I now save 400 euros a month. That works pretty well. I buy a lot of products in the bonus and if the detergent or hair spray is on sale, I immediately stock up. In addition, I am careful with, for example, expensive drinks. Amaretto or Bacardi, I don’t need that. I spend 100 euros a week on groceries and I also have leisure expenses. For those expenses, I’ll see what’s left over.

Do you ever withdraw money from your savings account?

“I sometimes take money from my savings account for holidays, but that account is also partly intended for that. And furthermore, if I need a new vacuum cleaner, for example, I also take that money from my savings. I do buy such purchases on offer.”

Would you like to change something about your financial situation?

“No, actually I am very satisfied. Paying rent is part of it. If you think that’s a shame every month, then I think you’re living wrong. For example, I never calculate back what I actually pay per night. The rent will never come back, but I also really enjoy having my own place and living on my own.”

The rent will never come back.

“I also think my salary is reasonable. This will soon increase again due to changes in the collective labor agreement. An extra pocket money is nice and in the long run own house would of course also be nice. But for now I am happy.”

What is your best financial tip for others?

“A lot is about status these days. Recognize that people spend money on designer clothes, expensive cars, bottles in the club or the latest phones. Others spend a lot of budget on branded clothing, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s not necessary.

Maybe it sounds crazy, but I don’t know what’s smart to do with my money either. For example, at school I never learned what you need to save to buy a house. What costs can you expect in life? What should you take into account? I think that more attention should be paid to this in education. I now have a large savings account, but I don’t really know what I’m doing right and what the options are. So for now, I’ll just wait it out. Hopefully house prices will fall further in the future. Perhaps the situation will change and then I will see further.”
