Geopark Harz. Braunschweiger Land. Ostfalen Receives National Award for Sustainability Education

National Award – Education for Sustainable Development awarded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German UNESCO Commission

On November 8th, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German UNESCO Commission awarded the National Award – Education for Sustainable Development (BNE). The head of the Education in Regions, Education for Sustainable Development department in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Dr. Andrea Ruyter-Petznek and the Secretary General of the German Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Roman Luckscheiter honored 29 actors for their outstanding commitment. The event took place in the Wichernsaal in the state capital Schwerin in cooperation with Über.Morgen gGmbH. The 29 award-winning initiatives reach people with innovative educational offerings, content and ideas and enable learners to actively and responsibly participate in shaping a sustainable future.

The UNESCO Global Geopark Harz. Braunschweiger Land. Ostfalen convinced the jury with its exemplary commitment to ESD and a special commitment to the United Nations’ Global Sustainability Goals.
Geopark office manager Astrid Witte and employee Tanja Mühlhaus accepted the certificate in Schwerin. When asked about the outstanding aspects of the award she received for her work in the field of ESD, Astrid Witte expressed her great joy: “This recognition is a valuable opportunity to increase our visibility. With the award, I hope that our geopark will increasingly come into the public eye. The increasing appreciation of ESD activities plays a central role, as it will help to promote awareness of sustainable practices in our region and strengthen people’s interest in these essential concerns.”
