Airbnb has made a commitment to the State of Geneva to automatically deduct, as of September 1, the cantonal tourist tax. It is the first online accommodation reservation platform to sign an agreement of this type with the canton of Geneva. On the other hand, it already cooperates with other Swiss cantons in this area.

The levy of the tourist tax is fully digital. The amounts collected are directly transferred to the authorities, at no cost, the economic development department said on Friday. The collection of the tourist tax was simplified in a new law adopted by the Grand Council last November.

Previously, the tourist tax varied between 1.65 francs and 4.75 francs, depending on the accommodation categories. Since January 1 of this year, a unified cantonal amount of 3.75 francs has been deducted from each overnight stay. Campsites benefit from an exception of 2.50 francs.
