Genesis X Speedium Coupe: Belgisch design in New York

On the eve of the New York salon – which will be open to the public from April 15 to 24, 2022 – Genesis unveiled the X Speedium Coupe, a styling study that is effectively an evolution of the Genesis Concept X that Hyundai’s premium subsidiary launched last year. showed.

Again, no mention is made of specifications, except that the drive is fully electric. With this style study for an electric coupé, the premium subsidiary of Hyundai is therefore mainly about showing how their design will evolve in the EV era. Genesis itself speaks of ‘Reductive design’, which with the idea of ’less is more’ revolves around understated elegance, clean lines and subtle curves.

Light signature

Like the Concept X, the X Speedium Coupe is characterized by flowing lines, but it stands out above all with its Two Lines lighting signature. It consists of two lines at the front over the entire width of the car, which even extend into the mudguards, to behind the front wheels. The lines, which fulfill the function of daytime running lights as well as low beam and high beam, take the form of Genesis’ signature radiator grille, which was still ‘classic’ on the Concept X.

“We give every design element room to breathe.
It is not the intention to make them compete with each other.” (Luc Donckerwolke, chief designer Genesis)

A luminous strip was also added to the rear. However, it does not connect the rear lights directly, as is the fashion today, but was integrated into the spoiler at the bottom of the rear window, with a triangle in the middle that serves as a third brake light. The flanks are characterized by a parabolic line that results in a streamlined look.

There are no direct production plans for this coupé, but the various design elements, especially the front part, should be seen returning in the six future electric models that Genesis wants to have in its range by 2030.
