GeForce RTX 4000 Price Trends: From Rock Bottom to Rising Prices, Nvidia’s Super Series and Supply Concerns

Graphics card prices have hit rock bottom this summer. Retailers and distributors tried to revive the low demand by cutting prices, and according to their hindsight, obtained from them by YouTube channel MLID, they went a bit overboard and pushed prices lower than necessary. Since the summer, prices have stagnated or increased slightly (of course on a global scale, in our country, compared to some other countries, the situation is further affected by e.g. higher inflation).

However, according to current information from the same sources, we should expect prices for the higher models of the GeForce RTX 4000 series to go even higher, i.e. to rise beyond the scope of this development. The reason is that Nvidia is preparing the release of the GeForce RTX 4000 Super series and does not want the news to end up worse than the current models in the price / performance ratio charts.

Distributors and resellers point out that the situation is already noticeably changing with the GeForce RTX 4090. One reseller said that while he bought the cheapest models for $1500-$1600 in the summer, the cheapest cards currently available won’t go below $1700. The supply is decreasing and those who want to have the cards in the menu have to pay extra. Distributors who inquired directly with Nvidia were told that availability would not improve until the release of the Super series.

The consequences of the summer decision, when it was revealed that Nvidia stopped production of the GeForce RTX 4000 in order to reverse the price drop that reached its maximum, are clearly starting to take full effect. The consequence of this decision was manifested several weeks in advance in Asia, especially in China, where the prices and availability of the GeForce RTX 4090 deteriorated already at the turn of September and October.

In recent days, the situation in China has been exacerbated by the American ban on the export of AI accelerators, which, due to strangely defined criteria, also affects the GeForce RTX 4090.

While the availability of GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is decreasing and prices are rising, the situation with GeForce RTX 4080 is diametrically different. Compared to other models from higher price levels, demand and sales remain at freezing point. Despite the drop in prices, there was no interest in the card, and the approached sellers and manufacturers of sets stopped buying it. It is possible that limiting the availability and increasing the price of the GeForce RTX 4090 is intended to create pressure to increase interest in the GeForce RTX 4080, among other things.
