Garmin faces massive service disruption after ransomware attack

If you’re having trouble syncing your phone with your Garmin smartwatch, it’s not your fault. Garmin Connect suffered an outage that began at 2 p.m. on July 22, according to comments on Twitter.

Garmin has posted on its website and social media that they are experiencing an outage that “ affects Garmin.com and Garmin Connect“. When users open the Garmin app, an error message is displayed and indicates that the service is “down for maintenance”.

The famous company of connected watches faces an interruption of its services. This means that not only can you not use the online services, but you cannot even sync your watch locally with the app. The outage also maintains forums and customer service offline. If you have a Garmin Instinct for example, synchronization will be impossible for the moment.

Phil Stokes, Security Researcher at SentinelOne, said the announcement appears to coincide with an attack on WastedLocker ransomware against society. Several Garmin employees also claimed that WastedLocker, a custom ransomware deployed by Evil Corp, a group of Russian criminals known for his Dridex and BitPaymer attacks, was behind the incident,

Ransomware is a type of malware that prevents users from accessing their system or personal files and which demands payment of a ransom in order to access it again. The first variants of this software were developed in the late 1980s, and payment had to be sent by mail. Today, ransom writers order payment to be sent via cryptocurrency or credit card.

Garmin tries to hide the problem

Selon ZDNet, iThome, a Taiwanese tech news source, shared a internal memo that Garmin IT staff sent to its factories in Taiwan, announcing two days of maintenance, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25.

Although the memo does not specifically attribute impromptu maintenance mode to a ransomware-type attack, sources told the Taiwanese news site that the incident was caused by a “virus”. A return to normal is not expected before several days.
