Macau, the largest gambling paradise in the world by revenue, has closed all casinos for the first time in two years. The reason for this is a new outbreak of COVID-19: 1500 people have tested positive since mid-June.
The casinos will be closed for at least a week. Residents of this special administrative region of China are also only allowed to leave the house for essential matters.
The outbreak of COVID-19 is by far the largest to date: in February 2020 the gambling city was also locked for 15 days, but then it only involved a few dozen infections.
In addition to the fifteen hundred infections in recent weeks, about nineteen thousand people are also in mandatory quarantine as a result of China’s zero-covid policy. There are also lockdowns in thirty zones of the city, which means that people are not allowed in or out of a zone.
Macau is the largest gambling city in the world by revenue. In terms of area, Las Vegas is a lot bigger than Macau, but in the American city there is much less money: every year the Macau casinos have a turnover that is six times greater than that in Las Vegas.
