Galaxy Z Fold 5: A Comprehensive Review and Durability Test by JerryRigEverything

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 didn’t do badly at all in the hands of JerryRigEverything
The biggest weakness is still the soft internal display
The strong point is the strength of the entire flexible structure

New flexible smartphones from Samsung went on sale this week – clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 5 and bookish Galaxy Z Fold 5. The Korean company mainly improved the first-named phone, but that does not mean that the Fold remained without innovations. One of them is, for example, a redesigned joint, which enabled the manufacturer to close tightly without a visible gap between the two wings. Has this design change affected the overall durability?

Galaxy Z Fold 5 in a traditional torture chamber

Although the Galaxy Z Fold 5 looks practically the same as its predecessor, no stone has been left unturned inside. The Korean manufacturer used a brand new joint, which is composed of fewer moving components, which should have a positive effect on its overall durability. The latest test by YouTuber Zack Nelson from the JerryRigEverything channel reveals whether Samsung’s new design has succeeded.

The test traditionally started with displays and their resistance to scratches. Here, nothing has changed between generations – until Corning comes up with a stronger Gorilla Glass or Samsung puts sapphire glass on the front, it will continue to be “broken” by points with a hardness of 6 according to the Mohs scale. The durability of the flexible display has not changed either, it can still be signed with just a fingernail.

Neither display can withstand direct fire. A permanent stain will appear on the outer AMOLED panel after a while, and the upper plastic layer will begin to melt on the inner one. For this reason, a year of the Samsung Care+ service, which Samsung adds to the purchased phone for free, can be useful – with it you are entitled to up to two display replacements per year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 pleasantly surprised with its dust resistance, although on paper it should only be water resistant. According to the test, however, it can withstand dust, sand and small stones, despite the fact that the two wings are significantly closer to each other. Dirt did not even get into the gears of the folding mechanism.

The conclusion then traditionally belonged to the bending test. The phone is made for it, but only in one direction. The design of the joint does not allow you to bend the flexible display on the outside, even when using really great force. Galaxy Z Fold 5, like its predecessors, left the torture unbroken.
