How the world changes, but the figure of Mary, Mother of God, intercessor, helper of the needy and idealized star of hope and beauty for many navigators in stormy seas, reflects some of humanity’s deepest needs. It is not surprising, then, that this emblematic woman has inspired some of the most glorious choral works ever written.

The Gabrieli Consort is made up of world-renowned performers and a large vocal and instrumental repertoire, spanning from the Renaissance to the present day. Formed as an early music ensemble by Paul McCreesh in 1982, Gabrieli have outgrown and remained true to their original identity. For nearly forty years, the ensemble’s repertoire has expanded beyond any expectation, but McCreesh’s ever-questioning spirit and expressive musicianship, along with a healthy degree of iconoclasm, remain constant features and continue to be reflected in the dynamic performances. of the set. Its repertoire includes important works from the oratorio tradition, virtuoso a cappella programs of music from many centuries, and innovative reconstructions of music for historical events.

Currently, at the center of Gabrieli’s activities is the development of a pioneering educational initiative in the Gabrieli Roar project. This ambitious partnership with the UK’s leading youth choirs has enabled them to work extensively with teenagers on intensive training programmes, focusing on recording major works in the oratorio repertoire and performances for such prestigious promoters as BBC Proms.

Gabrieli aims to create inspiring and thought-provoking performances that stand out from the crowd. He has long been recognized for the many award-winning recordings of his created during a fifteen-year association with Deutsche Grammophon. In 2010, Paul McCreesh established his own Winged Lion record label, which in its first year alone released four extremely diverse recordings, underscoring Gabrieli’s versatility and Paul McCreesh’s breadth of vision. The focal point of the Winged Lion catalog is the series of spectacular large-scale oratorio recordings made in conjunction with the Wroclaw Philharmonic Choir with the invaluable support of the National Music Forum, Wroclaw: Great Mass for the Dead by Berlioz, Elias de Mendelssohn and Britten’s War Requiem.

Gabrieli’s performances strive to recreate the original performances of musical works wherever possible, in the belief that historical performance ideals and old world knowledge are essential to creating music anew. Through lively music creation, engaged research, and the production of pioneering recordings, Gabrieli’s mission is to challenge common and accepted perceptions of classical music, as well as to revitalize and innovate to maintain the relevance of these great works of art in XXI century.
