G20.- Merkel considers the climate resolutions reached at the G20 summit a success

ROMA, 31 Oct. (DPA/EP) –

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today “a success” the resolutions for climate protection approved today at the summit of the Group of Twenty Industrialized and Emerging Countries (G20).

The outgoing president has also valued the results of the summit as a “good sign” for the world climate conference that will be held from today in Glasgow (Scotland), the COP26.

Likewise, the Foreign Minister stressed that, for the first time since 2016, the 19 main economic powers and the European Union have jointly committed to comply with the provisions of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

The United States subsequently withdrew from the agreement by decision of the administration of then President Donald Trump. His successor, Joe Biden, who first attended a regular G20 summit, reversed this move as one of his first official acts.

The G20 declaration has nevertheless caused great disappointment among climate activists. While the year 2050 was originally meant to be specifically set for “net zero greenhouse gas emissions or carbon neutrality”, the target is now only specified as “by mid-century or around” this date.
