“Fulda’s climate needs you” – 2023 seedlings planted
Despite the snow, many enthusiastic families had already arrived in the morning. “The tree planting campaign is an important sign of sustainability,” said Mayor Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld. The idea for the campaign came to three young activists, Amelie, Finja and Luisa, who wrote a letter to the mayor in the summer of 2021. Here they expressed this idea and thus laid the foundation for the tree planting campaign. That way, everyone could make a contribution to improving the climate and also “take home some of the state gardens show,” the girls said.
To offset a lifetime’s CO2 emissions, each person would need to plant an average of 440 trees, they explained. In their project they were accompanied by the environmental center. Among the seedlings distributed by the experts at the State Horticultural Exhibition are indigenous trees, but also special trees such as sweet chestnuts, according to LGS managing director Ulrich Schmitt. Everyone receives instructions for planting the seedlings, where the planting process is explained step by step with pictures. “We are happy to finally be able to distribute the trees,” he stressed.
Plenty of food was also supplied with pies and sausages. The environmental center has also held a few talks, and season tickets for the 2023 State Garden Show could already be purchased in advance.
