It was found that the cover near the fifth floor of the nuclear reactor building of Units 2 and 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, where an explosion occurred during the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, was contaminated with super-strong radioactive materials. The Mainichi Shimbun reported on the 27th that a person can die even if exposed to just one hour.
According to the interim report of the accident investigation released by the Japan Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission on the 26th, a circular reinforced concrete facility with a diameter of 12m and a thickness of about 60cm, which serves as a cover right above the reactor containment vessel, was contaminated with high concentration radioactive materials.
As a result of measuring the amount of cesium, which is a radioactive material, the second unit was estimated to be about 2 to 4 calibers (10,000 times that of 1 trillion) Becquerel (Bq, a unit representing the strength of radioactive materials). Unit 3 also reaches Becquerel at about 3rd. Each person could die within an hour of exposure. The Regulatory Commission analyzed that “at the time, immediately after the explosion, the cover functioned to prevent the leakage of radioactive materials to the outdoors, so it was severely contaminated.” Japan planned to start decommissioning work in earnest by taking out the nuclear fuel debris from the reactor of Unit 2 from next year. However, an analysis suggests that the entire decommissioning work may be delayed in the aftermath.
