Fryske National Party Calls on KRO-NCRV to Respect Frisian Language in “Farmer Seeks Wife” Program

The Fryske National Party (FNP) calls on KRO-NCRV to withdraw the participants of the program farmer seeks wife to speak their own language or dialect. In last Sunday’s episode, Bernice, Johan and Ype Jacob suddenly spoke Dutch instead of Frisian.

The candidates of the program would have been asked to speak in Dutch, because otherwise the crew would not be able to follow them. The Frisian party is outraged by the news and asks KRO-NCRV why these participants are not allowed to speak their “memmetaal” (mother tongue).

“In farmer seeks wife it is about the language of love, but everyone is of course free to speak in their own language or dialect,” KRO-NCRV further announced. “We will consult with the participants if there is any question of multilingualism. If everyone speaks the same language, you prevent anyone from feeling left out.”

The FNP presenter Yvon Jaspers and the crew also offer farmer seeks wife a Frisian course. “We are grateful for it,” said KRO-NCRV. “Who knows, we might make that into a new series farmer seeks wife use of.”
