From December 13th, new timetables for trains and buses will apply

Much small-small, everything should become easier

Actually, everything should have got better with the new Breisgau S-Bahn. After a good year, things are now at least going in the right direction: the timetable change in local public transport is imminent. From Sunday (December 13th, 2020) the new schedule for buses and trains in southern Baden will apply. Some things stay the same, others have been improved. An overview:

Breisgau-S-Bahn: East-West

In future, the trains will be winged in Gottenheim, with a few exceptions. One part of the train then continues as line S1 towards Breisach, the other part as S11 towards Endingen am Kaiserstuhl. In the opposite direction, the trains in Gottenheim are to be coupled again. There will be no need to change trains in Gottenheim in the future.

In future, departure in Freiburg towards Kaiserstuhl will always be after 8 a.m. at 8.02 / 8.32 a.m., 9.02 / 9.32 a.m., 10.02 / 10.32 a.m. and so on. The train arrives in Gottenheim at 8.14 / 8.44 a.m., 9.04 / 9.44 a.m. etc. Four minutes later, the journey is to continue to Endingen, where the trains arrive at minutes 11 and 41.

From the Kaiserstuhl in the direction of Freiburg, from Endingen it always goes at minutes 17 and 47. Arrival in Gottenheim is at 10 and 40, and the journey continues again at 17 and 47. Arrival in Freiburg is every full or half hour. The S1 will also run hourly to and from Kirchzarten in the future.

Breisgau-S-Bahn north-west

On the S5 line between Riegel-Malterdingen and Breisach, too, the SWEG has to adjust the timetables in order to guarantee the connection to the S1 line in Breisach and not to get in the way of the Kaiserstuhlbahn. During the morning rush hour, the S-Bahn runs from Riegel-Malterdingen towards Breisach every half hour, and every hour from 9:51 a.m. Arrival in Endingen is at minute 57, in Breisach at minute 28. In the opposite direction, the S5 runs every hour from 9.35 a.m., before that at different times. In Endingen it always continues on the hour, arrival in Riegel-Malterdingen is always at the 6th minute. Between 4.20 and 6.42 pm, the S5 commutes three times between Riegel-Malterdingen and Endingen.

Rhine Valley Railway

During the morning rush hour the Rheintalbahn runs every half hour, the rest of the day more or less every hour to the south via Köndringen, Teningen-Mundingen, Kollmarsreute and Gundelfingen. Every regional express (RE) and regional train (RB) will stop in Riegel. New in Riegel is the stop of the fast RE 17087 (departure 9.02 a.m. from Offenburg, arrival 9.39 a.m. in Freiburg) at 9.25 a.m. In Herbolzheim and Emmendingen there are, as usual, additional morning connections to and from Freiburg. In Denzlingen, on the other hand, passengers have to do without two fast RE connections.
To the north there is only a gap every hour in Kollmarsreute after 3 p.m. All RBs that start shortly after the hour in Freiburg stop in Teningen-Mundingen with two exceptions – shortly after 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Connectivity

In Riegel-Malterdingen, the connections of the Rhine Valley Railway to and from Freiburg are better than to and from Offenburg. On the S5 southbound, there are connections to all regional trains (RE) every two hours – at the 15th minute of each hour – as well as to the RE in the opposite direction to the RE, which start at half an hour in Freiburg. The connections to the regional trains in Riegel, which leave shortly after the full hour in the north, are served by bus line 103, which always leaves at .31 – at .35 every hour also towards Freiburg for the train coming from Endingen. In the morning rush hour, lines 102, 105 and 106 secure further connections to Freiburg.

To the north, passengers on the S5 in Riegel-Malterdingen usually have to wait 15 minutes for the regional train, shorter only in the early morning and late afternoon. With a waiting time of 16 to 30 minutes, line 103 connects to the regional train.

From the direction of Offenburg, passengers in the direction of Kaiserstuhl wait at least 17 minutes for their connection. The RB trains miss the bus in Riegel by three minutes.

If you want to change from the Rheintalbahn in Riegel to the S11 in the direction of Bahlingen / Gottenheim, you have three good connections in the morning, after which you have to wait around half an hour all day. Only in the late afternoon is there a good connection again.

You will receive detailed information on their respective connections HERE.
