From 2035, the European Union only wants new cars that drive fully electrically, e-fuels can also be an option

Reducing CO2 emissions from new cars in Europe to zero amounts to a commitment of fully electric motors. Of hybrid Cars, cars that combine a combustion engine and an electric motor, are still allowed to be sold, will only be decided in 2026.

At the request of some countries, such as Germany and Italy, the European member states did accept to consider giving the green light to alternative technologies, such as synthetic fuels, in the future. At least if the emission of greenhouse gases can be completely reduced in this way.

This concerns so-called e(electro)-fuels or biofuels, produced using renewable energy. For manufacturers, the advantage is that synthetic fuels can be used in existing combustion engines, but in terms of emissions, there is debate about whether progress can be made.

The EU countries also agreed on a €59 billion social climate fund and agreed on a reform of European emissions trading. The package was negotiated for more than 16 hours.
