Frightened Glasgow woman shares image of giant spider she believes gave her an infected arm

A Glasgow barman spoke of his shock after he caught a giant spider that had invaded his home and asked for help identifying it.

Gemma Thomson, from Moss gardenShe fears that the scary crawl is the same culprit who bit her about three months ago and left her arm aching and sore – which still causes her discomfort.

The 28-year-old woman, who is “really scared” of spiders, saw it the other day while watching TV with her partner and said it was the “biggest” she had ever seen. Daily notes reported.

He said, “We were watching TV in the living room on Thursday night. It was dark, but I saw him running across the carpet under the TV lights. I jumped onto the couch. I can’t handle spiders anyway. I am really afraid of them.

“My colleague ran over and grabbed a glass and put it on it. We both went to the kitchen. When we returned, the spider had pulled one of its legs from under the glass. He tried to run away.

A bar clerk from Glasgow asked for help identifying the “giant” spider he caught in his home.

“His body was about two inches when the legs were folded. It may be three inches or so with straight legs. Its legs are really long, but it’s the fangs that get me. This must be the biggest spider I’ve ever seen.”

Despite trying various apps to identify the spider, neither Gemma nor her partner could figure out what kind of spider it was, and she was concerned that there might be more unusually large spiders in their home.

He said, “I hope someone can tell me what kind of spider it is. About three months ago my arm was bitten by something and it became infected. So I went to the doctor three or four times and got antibiotics.

“Still sick and sometimes infected to this day. Doctors said it must have been an insect bite, but wasn’t sure what type of bite it was. He had never seen a normal bite infected like this before. I asked me. if only a spider could bite me.

“My neighbors were shocked when I showed them the photo. We don’t get spiders like that here. I’m afraid there are more at home.”

dr. Geoff Oxford of the British Arachnological Society told The Record he believes the spider could be a mansion spider.

And he also says spiders are often blamed for bites that are actually caused by something else.

dr. Oxford said, “This could be a species of the large Eratigena house spider. Spiders are generally not aggressive and most cases of suspected spider bites are caused by something completely different.”
