FRÍAS, Choya (C) Yesterday an unprecedented platelet collection operation was carried out at the Hematology and Hemotherapy Service of the Zonal de Frías Hospital for a young man from Fries diagnosed with leukemia.
“Platelets are a different donation than normal blood,” explained Dr. María Cristina Robín, head of this area at the local hospital, to later detail how this procedure works: “First, a sample is taken with a common syringe of which is used to carry out relevant blood tests such as group, factor, serology and compatibility of the virus; if that sample goes well, donors must travel to the capital for the second part of the procedure called platelet apheresis, whose use is much greater since each donor can help at least two patients “.
The professional explained that on this occasion “a dozen people who already have experience in blood donation were called to help Agustín Partiré, who suffers from acute leukemia and needs platelet transfusions almost daily”.
The doctor added: “Platelet apheresis is performed with a special machine that collects only the donor platelets, returning the rest of the plasma and red blood cells to the donor, the procedure takes at least 1 hour (different from donating blood which lasts 10 minutes) and there is no risk for the donor “.
