Neighboring Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands have laws in place allowing euthanasia under certain conditions, but France has not yet enacted legislation due in part to pressure from the Catholic Church.

In France, a law was passed in 2016 that allows doctors to administer sedatives that reduce patients’ consciousness, but this is limited to terminally ill patients.

Mr Macron said the new bill “opens the door to the possibility of requesting assisted suicide under strict conditions”. Eligible patients must meet these conditions, and the medical team will verify whether the decision is correct and confirm the criteria.

The patient’s family can appeal the decision.

The draft law is based on the work of a group of 184 French citizens randomly appointed to discuss the issue. The group completed its work last year, with 76% in favor of allowing some form of assisted suicide for people who wish to die.
