French Players Shine in the First Round of US Open Qualifiers

Continuation of the qualifications of theUS Open this Wednesday with the end of the first round. On Tuesday, four French people started well: Benoît Paire, Enzo Couacaud, Terence Atmane et Giovanni Mpetshi. This Wednesday, four other Tricolores will try to imitate them. From 5 p.m., a beautiful derby will take place. Hugo Gaston et Antoine Escoffier will tear each other apart for a place in the second round. The Toulousain, author of a very good summer on clay with two Challenger titles, missed his recovery on hard at Cincinnati. He will logically have to be wary of his compatriot, who is having a magnificent 2023 season. The Isérois is ranked 157th in the world after some very good runs on the secondary circuit.

Complex challenges for Cazaux, Herbert and Droguet…

Pierre-Hugues Herbert tries hard to get closer to his best level. Nothing is easy for the Alsatian who needs to chain victories. He will rub shoulders with George de Loore (174th). A complex entrance challenge. Arthur Cazauxin full swing in 2023, continues to approach the top 100. 121st in the world, he will be keen to erase his failure at Wimbledon, despite its very good season on grass. The task will not be easy against the Belgian Zizou Bergs (151st). Finally, Titouan Droguet, in 172nd place in the world, will have to get rid of the seeded n°2, Cristian Garin. The Chilean, 17th in 2021, may be irregular but he remains a very solid member of the top 100. We will have to achieve a performance.

Paire, Atmane, Couacaud and Mpetshi showed the way on Tuesday

Four French people made it to the second round and therefore showed the example on Tuesday. Benoit Pair, who had not replayed on hard courts since March, was to resume the rhythm of fast surfaces after a long journey on clay. Everything went well with Geoffrey Blancaneaux. In trouble in the service (10 double faults), the Val-de-Marnais did not last long (6-3, 6-2). In the next round, “Ben” will face Yu Hsiou Hsu. Mistrust: the Taiwanese, 237th in the world, had crossed the qualifications at theAustralian Open.

Terence Atmane was playing his first Grand Slam “qualifiers” abroad. Very efficient and regular on the secondary circuit, he confirmed his good dispositions and won after a big match against the Hungarian Mate Valkusz (226th), also impressive in Challenger. 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-3. The Frenchman bounced back well despite losing the second set when he had two match points. On Thursday, he will challenge the solid Australian James Duckworth (#12). On his side, Enzo Couacaud dominated James Munar in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. An excellent performance, especially in service, against the Spaniard, 81st in the world and seeded n°1. In the next turn, he will have a good shot to play against Mikhail Kukushkin. Finally, John Mpetshi Perricard, 241st this week, wants to take a step New-York. He started very well by winning with courage against the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (115e), 6-7(11), 7-6(5), 7-6(8).
