French municipalities. Ecologists reinforce positions in France. Hidalgo wins in Paris and Philippe in Havre

The “Greens” were the news of the night of the second round of municipal elections in France: they won in some of the most important and best known cities in France, such as in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille or Strasbourg, and in several other medium-sized ones.

The big losers of these municipal elections, which were very disturbed by the covid-19 pandemic, are the candidates of La Republique en Marche! (LREM), party of President Emmanuel Macron, who were beaten all over the country and failed to conquer even a chamber in a relevant city. For the “macronistas”, these elections were a real fiasco.

The Republican right managed to resist the vacant ecologist with some difficulty in some of its traditional bastions, but only in small and medium-sized municipalities, and the extreme right conquered Perpignan, an important city with more than one hundred thousand inhabitants.

The PS, despite having maintained Paris with Anne Hidalgo, will now have to count on a new strong opponent – ecologist – in the left and moderate wings of the French political spectrum. One of the examples happened yesterday, in Lille, where the socialist historian, Martine Aubry, was only elected by a minimum margin of a few tenths compared to an ecological candidate.

Édouard Philippe is the other winner of the night because, as Prime Minister, he had to manage hard and difficult crises with those of the “yellow vests”, that of the revolt against the revision of the pensioners’ system and the current one, of the covid-19. Philippe thus reinforces his position vis-à-vis Emmanuel Macron, with whom he has had frequent conflicts. In this regard, and due to the very poor results of LREM, Macron can also be considered one of the big losers of the election night.

It should be noted that the Franco-Portuguese Hermano Sanches Ruivo, founder of the well-known association Cap Magellan, was re-elected in Paris on the list of Anne Hidalgo. Sanches Ruivo was already an alderman in the previous Parisian chamber team.
