According to the French foreign minister, the Taliban are lying and France will not have any relationship with the newly formed government. Jean-Yves Le Drian gave an explanation to French television just before his departure to Qatar.
“The Taliban said they would let some foreigners and Afghans leave freely and spoke of an inclusive and representative government, but they are lying,” the minister told the press. “France refuses to recognize this government or have any kind of relationship with this government.”
Preparations
France has evacuated about 3,000 people from Afghanistan in recent weeks, most of them Afghans. To achieve this, the French already started preparations in mid-April, four months before the Taliban took power.
For new evacuation operations, talks have been held with the Taliban to set up an airlift. President Macron spoke of cautious negotiations. Qatar was also involved in the talks.
