Antibodies from the plasma of former Covid-19 patients could help the seriously ill. The university clinic is therefore looking for infected people who have been healthy for at least 14 days.
The University Medical Center Freiburg calls for people to donate plasma who have been proven to be infected with the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus and who have recovered. “The plasma of formerly infected people can be an important therapy component for patients who are acutely ill with Covid-19,” said Toni Cathomen, director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy at the university hospital, according to the press release. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. After infection with Sars-CoV-2, the plasma contains antibodies against the novel corona virus. If a person suffering from Covid 19 receives the plasma of a person who has already produced antibodies, there is strong evidence that the antibodies support the patient’s immune system in fighting the virus.

The plasma of Covid-19 patients recovered from the blood donation center can be given directly into the blood of critically ill patients in individual cases to support the immune system of these seriously ill people in their defense against viruses. Part of the donated plasma can also be passed on to plasma processing companies, which use the donations collected to produce a pure antibody preparation for Covid-19 sufferers.
If you want to donate a seriously ill Covid 19 patient with plasma donations, you must meet two requirements: The disease must have healed for at least four weeks and there must be positive evidence of Sars-CoV-2. Anyone who meets these two criteria can contact the university hospital by email. The blood donation center will then contact the interested parties to arrange appointments for the preliminary examination and the plasma donation. Plasma donations can be made every two to four months at weekly intervals.
