Freiburg: State-wide outbreak of avian influenza – Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district also affected

In addition to today’s notification from the Ministry for Rural Areas in Baden-Württemberg, the district of Breigau-Hochschwarzwald is also affected by the state-wide outbreak of avian influenza. Accordingly, suspected cases occurred in a total of 18 farms, including 4 farms with more than 25 animals. If these cases are confirmed, the veterinary office of the district office orders the establishment of corresponding restricted areas and observation areas. A final diagnosis is expected tomorrow. As a precaution, veterinarians from the veterinary authority have already killed all animals in three farms.

As in other districts, the farms affected had bought pullets from an infected farm in North Rhine-Westphalia at stalls in the district at the beginning of the month. It is possible that other farms could also be affected that had also obtained animals in this way. The veterinary office asks all chicken farmers who bought poultry from a mobile poultry dealer on March 18 or 19 to get in touch as soon as possible by phone at 0761 2187-3928 or by email at [email protected].

There is currently no risk to human health. Eggs and chickens can only be brought and sold regionally in the restricted areas under certain conditions. If restricted areas are set up, eggs from unsuspecting farms may be marketed via their own packing stations with the approval of the responsible animal health authority; self-marketing, for example via farm shops, is not possible.

Further information for consumers and poultry farmers can be found on the homepage of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Rural Areas and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office, as well as on the Robert Koch Institute website.
