Freiburg: Purchase premium for new vehicles – Open letter from the regional association Bündnis 90 / DIE GRÜNEN Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald to Prime Minister Kretschmann

Dear Prime Minister Kretschmann, dear Winfried,
On the basis of an exchange in the context of a digital general meeting of our district association and many of the reactions of our members and local associations brought to us, we comment on the demand for a purchase premium for new cars as follows:
From our point of view, such a bonus as an isolated measure is not expedient, neither ecologically nor economically sensible and sets the wrong political tone.

– A purchase premium for gasoline and diesel-powered combustion engines promotes the private transport of fossil fuel-driven vehicles and thus the continuation of a mobility option that is no longer sustainable in terms of climate policy

– The new car premium in individual transport has no incentive to invest in new technologies, it usually only supports financially strong households who take the premium to top up the funds already available for car purchase.

– The premium ties up tax money that should be invested in the further development of the ecological transport transition

– Despite the demand for a scrappage bonus, the car companies have so far shown no initiative to forego dividend payments and to redistribute funds.

In our view, aid and support programs should be geared towards ecological and climate-protecting innovations, especially in crisis situations. Industrial funding makes sense where it promotes and promotes the development of ecologically compatible drives, helps companies to produce more energy-efficiently and with lower emissions, and thereby safeguards jobs in the long term.

Specifically, we demand:

– State aid for the maintenance and expansion of public transport by rail and bus

– Alignment of funding to various ecologically oriented forms of mobility, including cycling

– Coupling of aid to the auto industry and sales premiums exclusively for low-emission drives and the binding obligation of the corporations to increase innovation in the conversion of the model range

– A binding obligation on the part of automobile groups to waive dividend payments when receiving state aid or a corresponding obligation to repay aid before dividend payment

With kind regards
Daniela Evers, Jakob Mangos, Dr. Frank Riepl, Gudrun Wöbbeking
