Freiburg: Paper Atlas 2020: Freiburg receives special award for exemplary use of recycled paper – Federal Environment Minister Schulze has awarded the city for outstanding commitment

In Berlin today, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze honored the city of Freiburg for its outstanding commitment to the use of recycled paper. In the 2020 paper atlas city competition organized by the Pro Recyclingpapier initiative, Freiburg has been performing at its best for ten years. For this there was now the special award “multiple winner”. The “most recycled paper-friendliest city in 2020” is Erlangen; Cuxhaven was named “Newcomer of the Year”.

The paper atlas has been showing paper consumption and the proportion of paper with the Blue Angel in German cities since 2008. The competition partners are the Federal Environment Ministry, the Federal Environment Agency, the German Association of Cities and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities. This year, the 99 participating large and medium-sized cities set a new record with an average recycling paper quota of 91 percent.

Environment Mayor Gerda Stuchlik, who accepted the award in Berlin, emphasized: “By using recycled paper, we are making an important contribution to protecting the climate and resources: Compared to fresh fiber paper, the production saves at least 60 percent water and energy and causes significantly fewer CO2 emissions . Since 2010, Freiburg has saved almost 55 million liters of water and over 11 million kilowatt hours of energy. “
