Freiburg: Funding volume for landscape conservation measures in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district last year at a record level – close cooperation between the nature conservation authority, the agricultural authority and the landscape conservation association is bearing fruit

In the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, the amount of funding for landscape conservation measures reached a record level of almost 2.5 million euros in 2020. That means an increase in funds of around 370 percent over the past ten years.

“This positive development shows that landscape protection is very important to us. The district achieves exemplary and sustainable profit for nature and people with funding from the EU and the state. This is also thanks to the extremely effective and close cooperation between the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Landscape conservation association as well as the close interlinking and coordination with the lower agricultural authority of the district office “, emphasizes district administrator Dorothea Störr-Ritter.

Numerous farmers, landscape conservation companies, service providers, private individuals and communities in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district receive annual funding from the Landscape Management Directive (LPR) for measures in landscape and biotope care and species protection. These measures serve to keep the landscape open, which is also important for tourism, to promote biodiversity and to preserve habitats, especially on steep slopes or on areas that are difficult to manage and mostly uneconomical.

Furthermore, many of these measures contribute to the networking of habitats and the connection of biotope structures. The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald has the most nature conservation areas compared to the other districts in Baden-Württemberg, so that the promotion of the implementation of landscape conservation measures in the district office of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in the interests of biological diversity is given a very high priority.

The budget funds made available by the state and the EU for these tasks are requested and managed annually by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office in close cooperation with the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald Landscape Conservation Association.

In addition to the classic LPR measures for the extensification of agriculturally used areas within the framework of contractual nature conservation, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Landscape Conservation Association also commission measures for biotope maintenance and biotope networking. In addition, farmers, municipalities, landowners and nature conservation associations receive funding for nature conservation purposes such as herd protection measures for wolf prevention, the care of vineyards or the preservation and care of natural monuments.
