The Freiburg Hackathon, which took place for the sixth time this year, is a special team event that focuses on the joint development of innovative ideas and solutions for challenging topics. At the same time, he helps to strengthen the companies in the South Baden region in the digital transformation.

The Hackathon 2020 now took place over the weekend (May 22-24) under the patronage of Mayor Martin Horn. With his focus on “Smart & Digital Health”, he not only hit the nerve of the times – keyword Covid-19 and the associated challenges in medical care. He also brought new ideas and exciting approaches – in a region for which the healthcare system with over 40,000 employees is a key economic factor.

Originally planned as an on-site event in the Carl-Schurz-Haus, the organizers quickly designed an online hackathon due to the corona crisis. They were inspired by the big #WirvsVirusHackathon of the federal government, support came from the Chaos Computer Club Freiburg.

In just 48 hours, 12 international teams created impressive, diverse concepts, apps and programs. The field of participants consisted of a colorful mixture of people with different backgrounds, professions and skills.

Many teams were made up of interdisciplinary developers, industry specialists, creatives and others, so that not only code was written, but comprehensive concepts could be developed. The event was particularly enriched by participants from all over the world, from Mexico to Norway.

The three winning teams were able to receive cash prizes of 1,000 euros each. With Lea, a digital health assistant was created that actively includes people in preventive healthcare through helpful functions. With the concept of digital rehabilitation, a playful, logopedic training for stroke patients was designed. The Alois app serves as a contact point and support for the digital treatment of depression. The MedQuest team won the special prize donated by BZ.medien with a solution for accelerated diagnosis by involving medical students. The winners were chosen by Manfred Neufang (BZ.medien), Prof. Jirka Dell’Oro-Friedl (HS Furtwangen), Nicole Battenfeld (Techniker Krankenkasse) and Peter Neske (Pfizer).

The hackathon weekend was preceded by a workshop with industry representatives, in which the challenges were discussed and perspectives uncovered. On this basis, the hackathon participants then designed their digital solutions from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Then, in a third stage, it is about designing a sustainable business model so that the prototype can be developed into a marketable product. BadenCampus will now support the hackathon winners with the format of the Start-up Lab.

The hackathon 2020 was organized by bwcon, Carl-Schurz-Haus, DIGIHUB Südbaden, digital.freiburg and the universities of Furtwangen and Offenburg. The event was realized with the friendly support of GE Healthcare, Techniker Krankenkasse, Pfizer, BZ.medien, highQ and kultwerk. The support from the cooperation partners BadenCampus, FWTM, Founders Club Freiburg and the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald also contributed to the success of the event.
