Freiburg: Education for All e.V. offers free German courses for new immigrants from the Freiburg region – successful cooperation in challenging times – Archbishopric Foundation supports Freiburg integration project

– The Freiburg Education for All Association (BFA) has been offering free German courses for newly immigrated people since 2015. The aim of the offer is to accompany people from literacy to B2 level and thus to offer them a long-term opportunity to learn a language. An important factor in the success of integration work is the mobility of the participants to the language courses. The Bishop’s Archbishopric Foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg supports BFA with up to EUR 65,000 annually.

Education for All e.V. (BFA) wants to create equal opportunities. For this, BFA creates meeting places for people with unequal educational opportunities. BFA achieves this by enabling mobility by providing an additional monthly ticket for local public transport for people who are entitled to basic security benefits. The participants pay a self-determined solidarity share of this (average 17 euros / month) and receive the outstanding balance through a new, valuable support: For a few weeks now, the mobility success factor has been fully supported by the Archbishopric Foundation.

Since the BFA participants not only come to class from the Freiburg city area, but also sometimes travel long distances from the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Emmendingen and Lörrach, access to mobility is a decisive factor in BFA’s successful integration work. The language courses in these counties are still not available or not available sufficiently. The monthly ticket of the Regio-Verkehrsverbund Freiburg (RVF) is an opportunity for our participants to take part in language classes and also in social (social, cultural, economic) life. Restricting your own mobility options creates obstacles for participants to bring themselves and their families into contact with others.

Mobility guarantee in times of SARS-CoV-2:
As early as March 11th, 2020, BFA decided to interrupt classes for the time being due to the pandemic caused by the corona virus (SARS-CoV-2). Our cooperation and the exchange between all participants build on mutual trust and encounter at eye level – we would like to follow this basic value in this situation as well: At the moment one-on-one conversations are conducted on the phone or via WhatsApp, “digital classrooms” are installed and “homeschooling” via apps and language learning programs provided. BFA employees and volunteers are always available for all participants, even in these physically distant times! So we work directly with our success factors, even over the currently necessary distance. Mobility, which is made possible for the eligible participants thanks to the support of the Archbishop’s Chair, is very important for some participants even in times when society is forced to become “more immobile”. Because many people still have the need to be mobile to shop or visit a doctor, for example. Mobility is guaranteed even in these times.

On behalf of all participants, those responsible from BFA would like to thank the Bishop’s Archbishopric Foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg and its Board of Directors, Archbishop Stephan Burger. BFA is happy together with the people who receive this funding, which is so important to them. Our vision is a world that enables everyone to participate in society through education. We are now working on this together with our new sponsor.

Info:
Education for All e.V. (BFA) was founded as an initiative in January 2015. Since then, the association has offered free German courses for newly immigrated people in Freiburg and the surrounding area, most of which are run by volunteer teachers. The aim of the offer is to support those people in the region on their individual educational paths who find integration difficult due to the lack of access to educational offers.
