Freiburg: badenova subsidiary badenovaWÄRMEPLUS: Regenerative heat recovery from the depths – preparation of the 3D seismic measurements

The badenova subsidiary badenovaWÄRMEPLUS is planning the next step to examine the subsurface for environmentally friendly, CO2-free heat. In January 2022, the 3D seismic measurements will begin in seven municipalities in Breisgau. For this purpose, the property owners and tenants involved in the implementation of the measurement will be informed in the coming weeks and asked for permission to enter.

On behalf of badenovaWÄRMEPLUS, the company IPS GmbH from Celle will be on the road in Breisach am Rhein, Merdingen, Freiburg – Munzingen, Schallstadt, Ehrenkirchen, Bad Krozingen and Hartheim over the next few weeks. Due to the geological structures, experts suspect natural hot thermal water resources in this area at a depth that is suitable for a sustainable heat supply. In order to geologically explore the exact location, a so-called 3D seismic is to be carried out. The 3-D seismic measurement allows a “fluoroscopy” of the subsurface in a range of a few hundred meters down to a depth of a few kilometers without interfering with the subsurface.

How exactly is it measured?

At the beginning of the measurement, the area on which the measurements are to take place is marked and the geophones are laid out for the intended measurement section. Geophones are about 15 cm tall measuring sticks (the functionality is similar to a microphone) that are inserted into the earth. Measurements are made wirelessly. The use of the most modern recording techniques keeps the measurement time as short as possible.

A traveling convoy consisting of three impulse vehicles – accompanied by traffic safety vehicles – drives slowly through the measurement area. They stop about every 40 meters and generate short impulses and vibrations. The geophones pick up the impulses reflected from the subsurface in the various layers of the earth. This creates a detailed picture of the geological structures. After completing the measurements, all markings and other measuring devices are removed.

The 3D seismic measurements are carried out from January to early March. The planning of the measuring points takes place in consideration of the local conditions. The affected property owners and tenants will already be informed by IPS GmbH about the planned measurements during these weeks and asked for permission to enter the property.

What are the effects of the measurements?

The convoy may cause short-term traffic disruptions, comparable to a temporary impairment caused by garbage trucks, for example.

The operating noises of the exploration fleet can be heard in the vicinity of the measurements, similar to what can happen in small construction projects. The vibrations caused by the impulse vehicles can be felt in a narrower radius and correspond roughly to the vibrations when a tram drives past. These low-intensity seismic waves are barely perceptible to humans and animals and are harmless.

Additional accompanying measurements ensure that all standards and safety regulations for buildings are complied with. Measurements are made exclusively on the surface of the earth, so the terrain remains intact except for possible lanes of the measuring fleet. Special consideration is given to environmental protection. Should minor damage occur despite all the precautionary measures, these will be regulated.

“Like any construction vehicle, the impulse vehicles can easily sink in or create hollows on unpaved roads. If you discover such or other damage or if you have any further questions, please contact us. We take care of it unbureaucratically ”, says Simon Laub, project manager of badenovaWÄRMEPLUS.
